The root bark of the flowering dogwood tree, the state flower of Virginia, was used as a tonic and an astringent. "Tonic" preparations were believed to be useful in restoring the healthful "tone" of tissues and organs. The Supply Table lists four different "recipes" for dogwood, recommending various doses depending on which part of the plant was used and how it was prepared.
