This perennial yellow-flowering shrub was introduced from Europe as an ornamental in the early nineteenth century. According to another Confederate Surgeon General publication, it could be "found growing abundant on the banks of rail roads." Scotch broom is now listed as an invasive species by the U.S. Forest Service with a range from California to Maine.
